Module 4 Healthcare Interpretation IV

Review types of the major medical specializations and relevant terminology (i.e. Cardiology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Oncology, and Neurology)

Interpret in major types of medical appointments incorporating commonly used terminology

Deal with the variety of terms used in pertinent types of medical appointments

Identify challenging situations during medical assignments and resolve them in accordance with the Standards of Practice

Module 5 Sexual Assault

Review the definitions and context of the sexual assault, abuse, and consent

Provide opportunities to examine personal biases and assumptions and how they may affect students’ future work with victims/survivors of sexual assault

Offer interpretation practice using the Sexual Assault Care Centre documents and role plays

Recognize personal bias and deal with applicable job situations in accordance with the Standards of Practice

Module 6 Mental Health & Vicarious Trauma

Identify a variety of mental health disorders and their common elements

Acquire understanding of what is involved in interpreting for a mental health patient, and how to adjust to quickly changing assignment demands

Recognize impact of professional experiences on your emotional and physical state (vicarious trauma) and apply self-care techniques to promote interpreter’s overall health.

Offer interpretation practice via repeat-back exercise, conference call and role plays.

Module 7 Public Health Interpretation

Navigate through various public health programs knowing the relevant terminology and types of assignments

Find solutions to challenging situations on the job and act accordingly with the applicable principles of the Code of Ethics.
